Composite decking can change the feel of your old deck

old deckWhen your deck is falling apart and becoming unsafe to use, it’s time for an upgrade. As was this old wooden deck in North Vancouver, the years had just passed by and the deck was looking tired and uninviting. With rotted deck boards and a staircase that was about to fall over, it was time to tear it all apart and give it a new breath of life. After the decision to keep the layout the same, next was deciding what material to use. The client was after something that looked great and was going to last years to come. The final decision was composite decking with a glass railing all round. The dark grey composite decking matched with black trimmings, the idea was in place and construction can begin.

old stairsShortly after the first board was taken up, the rest of the decking boards were removed and everything was back to bear bones framing. The entire demo process was less than 2 hours and work had begun on bringing this deck back to life. Inspecting the unseen parts of the deck, it was clear that rot was an issue and the decking boards had just become weathered over the years. The stairs were the worst area and were barely standing anymore.

composite decking stairsWhile Mark and Magnus worked on preparing the deck for the new composite decking, I worked on the new stair stringers and calculating the best option for measurements. With the three of us working away as a team in the warm Vancouver sun, the job was an absolute breeze and was over the same week it began. The new composite decking looks great paired with the black fascia and railing combo.

With the addition of a friendly privacy panel on the northern side, this deck really is the centrepiece of the backyard and brings the entire family together. They have young children over playing in the yard often, and having the glass railings means the children can be easily supervised from anywhere. The client was extremely happy with the look and feel of the new composite decking, and just in time for the warm Vancouver summer ahead!
