Breathe some new life into your old vinyl decking

old decking

This deck is nestled among the trees on the edge of a beautiful creek deep in North Vancouver. A perfect spot if any for a deck to call home. With the gentle noises of the creek below, to the many different wildlife species wandering around, you could find some peace and tranquility here amongst nature. Unfortunately this vinyl decking has lost its edge and become dilapidated over the years and has lost that calming edge. With the railings looking worn and a couple of holes through the decking, it was time for an update.

old damaged wood railingAfter a conversation with the client about what they were looking for and settling on the look they wanted, construction began. Once the old vinyl decking material was torn up, it was noticed that water had leaked in and damaged some of the underlying plywood. Not everywhere but in a few spots near the stairs and along the railing edge. After further inspection the damage was not critical and the deck could be saved with minimal repair.

Vinyl decking waterproofOnly having to tear up 2 damaged sheets of plywood and inserting some solid blocking, the damaged flooring was repaired.  Shortly after taking off the old plywood we realised that there was a structural issue and the deck was actually not fully supported in some areas. Once this was brought to the clients attention it was taken care of with no change to the original plan.

The client chose the beautiful Driftwood pattern from Deksmart which gives that moody cabin feel and looks great. The existing rails already looked great but just needed a new top rail, and the new cedar rail really pops amongst the forest backdrop. With a wood trim used for the wall-to-deck detail to hide the waterproofing that has taken place behind it, once painted to match the rest of the deck looks fantastic.
