Are you considering a new deck construction in Burnaby? Decks are popular in the Vancouver area, and they’re a great place to socialize with friends in the summer months. If you’re considering a new Burnaby deck construction, there are a few important things you should know about building a deck – regardless of whether you’re planning to go it alone or hire a contractor to help you. Building a safe and functional deck involves several key steps, and making a slight mistake on one of these steps could result in an unsafe deck or a deck that doesn’t meet certain key criteria for which you strived. If you’re about to build a new deck in Burnaby, take the time to review the procedure we used in a recent deck construction. These steps will ensure that your deck is safe and functional for you and your family.
Demolish the Old Deck
This sounds like a fairly basic step, but it bears repeating. If you already have a deck in place that you need to demolish, it is important to factor that in to the timeline for your build. You can pry the boards off with a pry bar, or if the nails are sticking too much, bring out a power saw – you can cut the boards in half so that you are only prying a few nails at once, meaning you won’t need to use as much force.
Make Sure The Soil Won’t Erode From the New Deck
This is a critical step. You could construct a deck so beautiful it gets featured in home design magazines, but if the footings aren’t solid, the soil will erode over time and you’ll have a serious problem on your hands. Soil erosion underneath your deck will cause the deck to collapse in some places. You can avoid this with one simple step: pouring concrete footings. Make sure to dig your footings below the frost line so that they don’t heave as the ground thaws and freezes. You want to build a deck that stays put year round, and good footings are critical to this.
Deck Construction Frame the New Deck With Precision
The next step in building a deck is framing it. For this process, it is generally best to use treated lumber, as the frames are usually invisible once the decking is on. Pressure treated lumber is not only less expensive than untreated lumber, but also rot and insect resistant. To properly frame a deck, you will want to set the beams on the posts and accurately install the joists.
Install the Decking With Your Chosen Wood
After framing the deck, the next step is to install the decking. We recently did a project where we framed the deck with pressure treated wood and then installed Tigerwood hardwood decking. The result was beautiful. You can use hardwood for the decking like we did in this case, or you could use pressure treated wood or even cedar. Ultimately, the wood you choose will depend on your personal style preference and your budget. This step is a fairly straightforward one and should give you little trouble. However, working with a harder wood is more difficult, so if you decide to do this, you might want to contact a decking professional.
Install Railings To Make Your Deck Safe
The final step of a deck build is installing the railings. On the deck mentioned above, we used aluminum railings for a classy but modern aesthetic. Cedar is also a great option for railings, as cedar tends to work well for the vertical components of a deck.
