This unique house in the heart of Vancouver is quite remarkable to see. I was told from the homeowner that the house was built by an eccentric architect many years ago. This home looks fantastic but was in need of a change. The deck on the top floor is not practical and serves as quite the eye sore. We were to tackle all the decks in this home, but the main project is removing the top enclosure and replacing with something a little more modern.
Starting The Job Off Safely
Since we are working at such high heights here and removing all protective barriers, the first step is to set up scaffolding. 4 levels of scaffolding are erected at the side of the house and will serve as our only access to the upper deck. With the scaffolding built and secured to the side of the house, access to the deck is taken care of. Next step is to make working on the deck safe. Our entire team are educated and fully qualified to work at heights. With a couple of anchor points mounted onto the wall, all work is carried out with a safety harness and safety line attached.
Removing The Greenhouse
The team start right away and remove all glass panels as safely as possible. Each panel has to be treated with the utmost care as to not shatter or drop them. Glass panels this size can be dangerous and need to be treated with respect. The panels are removed and safely lowered down through the scaffolding to the ground to be recycled.
Installing New Siding
With all the glass panels removed and the deck upgraded with new Tufdek vinyl membrane, the next step is to tend to the old siding. The old siding had a large area through the middle missing where the old canopy attached to the house.
This obviously couldn’t remain this way with the greenhouse gone so first thing we do is remove all the siding. We order new siding pre-painted and colour coded to the existing siding. The new siding now extends from the deck all the way up to the roof and gives the house an entirely new look.
The new change to the house looks amazing and the client was extremely happy with the outcome, as were we.
